Driving in Snow & Ice

How to travel safely in snow and ice — and what to do if you get stranded.

Heavy snow can make UK roads hazardous within minutes. Knowing how to read weather warnings, prepare your vehicle, and what to do if you get stuck could keep you and your passengers safe this winter.

Part 1: Before You Set Off

GOV.UK Highway Code

📌 FORCES vehicle check and pre-trip guidance sourced from the RAC, RoSPA and GOV.UK Highway Code

Some parts of the UK can experience significant snowfall in winter, and conditions can deteriorate rapidly. The Met Office issues Yellow, Amber and Red weather warnings — always check before travelling.

❄️
Amber/Red warning: avoid travel if possible

Met Office

During Amber or Red Met Office warnings, authorities advise against non-essential travel. If in doubt, stay home.

FORCES vehicle check

Before driving in cold weather, run through the FORCES check:

  • C — Coolant(冷卻液/防凍液):檢查水位並確保含有防凍成分
  • F — Fuel: Ensure you have enough fuel; you may need to run the engine for warmth if stranded
  • O — Oil: Check oil is between the minimum and maximum marks
  • R — Rubber (tyres & wipers): Legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm — aim for at least 3mm in winter; check tyre pressure; if wipers are frozen, never force them on — use de-icer or lukewarm water (not boiling)
  • C — Coolant: Check the level and ensure the mixture includes antifreeze
  • E — Electrics: All lights clean and working; if battery is over 4 years old, consider a pre-winter check
  • S — Screen wash: Use a quality wash rated to at least -15°C

Emergency kit for your car

  • Ice scraper and de-icer spray
  • Shovel and a bag of sand or cat litter (to help wheels grip)
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Warm clothing, blanket and waterproof boots
  • High-energy snacks, water and a flask of hot drink
  • Fully charged phone and power bank
  • First aid kit and breakdown contact card

Part 2: Driving in Snow & Ice

📌 Driving techniques sourced from GOV.UK Highway Code, RoSPA and RAC winter driving guidance

  • Clear all snow before driving: Remove snow from all windows, lights, number plates and the roof. Roof snow can slide onto following vehicles and may result in a fine
  • Pull away in 2nd gear: On slippery surfaces, use second gear to move off gently and avoid wheel spin
  • Leave a massive gap: Stopping distances on snow and ice can be up to 10 times longer than on dry roads — leave far more space than usual
  • Drive gently: Avoid sudden braking, sharp acceleration or abrupt steering; brake well before bends
  • Use lights correctly: Use dipped headlights in low visibility; use fog lights when visibility drops below 100 metres, but switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other drivers
  • Give gritters space: Keep well back from gritting lorries and snowploughs — never overtake them

Part 3: Black Ice

GOV.UK Highway Code

📌 Black ice identification and response based on RoSPA road safety factsheets and GOV.UK Highway Code

Black ice is an almost invisible thin layer of ice that blends with the road surface — extremely hard to spot until you're on it.

How to spot it

  • Watch for: shaded areas, under trees, bridges and flyovers
  • Road looks wet but no spray is thrown up as you drive
  • Steering suddenly feels unusually light or the car begins to drift

If you hit black ice

  • Stay calm — do not brake suddenly
  • Lift off the accelerator and hold the steering wheel steady — let the car ride through
  • If the car skids, steer towards the direction you want to go (not towards the skid)

Part 4: If You Get Stuck in Snow

📌 Stranded-in-snow guidance sourced from the RAC, RoSPA and GOV.UK guidance

要做Do this

  • Stay in the car — it's warmer than outside and easier for rescuers to find you
  • Switch on hazard lights so others can see you
  • Run the engine for a few minutes each hour to warm up, but first check the exhaust pipe is not blocked by snow (a blocked exhaust can cause fatal carbon monoxide poisoning)
  • Move your limbs gently inside the car to keep circulation going
  • Call your breakdown service with your location; only call 999 if there is immediate danger to life

Don't do this

  • Don't walk for help in a blizzard unless rescuers are close by
  • Don't let the engine idle continuously — it wastes fuel
  • Don't let everyone sleep at once — keep at least one person awake
  • Don't over-exert yourself shovelling — heavy exertion in cold can put dangerous strain on the heart
💡
If your wheels spin

Don't floor the accelerator. Try rocking the car gently back and forth, or place sand or cat litter under the wheels for grip, then use a higher gear (2nd or 3rd) and ease away slowly.
