Vehicle Breakdown Guide

What to do if your vehicle breaks down on a UK road or motorway — keep yourself and passengers safe.

A vehicle breakdown on a UK motorway can be dangerous if handled incorrectly. Knowing the right place to stop, how to exit safely, and who to call can prevent a stressful situation from becoming a serious one.

Part 1: Prepare Before You Drive

Ask the Police

📌 In-car kit recommendations sourced from the AA and Highway Code; motorway safety guidance based on National Highways and Ask the Police

Vehicle breakdowns are one of the most common roadside emergencies in the UK. Being prepared can keep you and your passengers safe.

Keep in your car

  • High-visibility vest — put it on after a breakdown to be seen clearly
  • Torch and spare batteries
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Emergency blanket
  • Phone charger (car charger or power bank)
  • Emergency contact card with breakdown number
  • Warning triangle (for non-motorway roads only — never place on a motorway)
💡
Before long journeys: check your breakdown cover

Before a long journey, confirm your breakdown membership (AA, RAC, Green Flag etc.). Non-members can be rescued on the spot but costs are significantly higher and wait times longer.

Part 2: Immediate Response — Go Left

📌 Stopping procedure sourced from the AA, Highway Code and National Highways guidance

When breaking down on a motorway, the priority is always your safety — not fixing the car.

(Emergency Area, EA)
(Sidelights)
  1. Try to leave the motorway — if the car still has power, aim for the next exit or service area
  2. If you can't: go left — signal left and move to the hard shoulder or Emergency Area (EA)
  3. Park correctly — stop as far left as possible, turn the wheels to the left (away from traffic), and switch on hazard lights; in darkness or fog also use sidelights
  4. Do not place a warning triangle — this is dangerous on UK motorways and explicitly not recommended

Part 3: Passenger Safety — Exiting & Waiting

Highway Code

📌 Exit and waiting procedures based on the AA, National Highways and Highway Code guidance

Do this

  • All passengers exit via the left-side doors (away from traffic)
  • Cross the barrier and stand on the embankment or open ground behind it — well away from traffic and the vehicle
  • Wait behind the vehicle (facing oncoming traffic) so you can see approaching danger
  • Put on a high-vis vest immediately if you have one

Don't do this

  • Don't stand beside the car or near a live lane
  • Don't attempt roadside repairs unless you're in a completely safe location
  • Leave pets in the car — they may panic and run into traffic
  • Don't place warning triangles on or near the motorway

Part 4: Getting Help

Ask the Police

📌 Emergency phone and rescue procedures based on National Highways, the AA and Ask the Police guidance

First option: use the roadside emergency phone

Follow the orange arrows on the hard shoulder marker posts to the nearest emergency phone (usually every mile). These phones are free, connect directly to police or National Highways, and automatically pinpoint your location — more reliable than a mobile call.

Calling for help by phone

  • National Highways:0300 123 5000

Information to give when calling

Your registration number, exact location (the number on the nearest marker post), and whether you have any vulnerable passengers (elderly, disabled or children).

Part 5: Special Situations

Highway Code

📌 Smart motorway and live lane guidance based on National Highways, the AA and Highway Code

(Smart Motorway)Smart Motorway

  • No permanent hard shoulder — aim for an orange Emergency Refuge Area (EA) (spaced every 500–1,500m)
  • Once inside, use the SOS phone to notify the control centre; do not rejoin the carriageway without authorisation

Stuck in a Live Lane

  • If the car dies and you cannot move it: stay inside, keep seatbelt on, switch on hazards
  • Call 999 immediately, stating your location and situation
  • Disabled drivers should also remain in the car with seatbelt on and call 999
💡
Rejoining the motorway

From a hard shoulder: accelerate and signal right when there is a safe gap in traffic. From an EA: call the control centre first — they may display a Red X to close lane 1 to help you rejoin safely.
