72-Hour Household Emergency Checklist for UK Families

GOV.UK Prepare advises households to keep basic supplies for disruption lasting “a few days”. SafeNest uses 72 hours (3 days) as a practical starting point, while clearly separating a home shelter-in-place store from an evacuation grab bag.

🏠
Home Shelter-in-Place Store

Kept at home for power cuts, water outages and severe weather. Start with three days, then extend gradually for space, medical and pet needs.

🎒
(Grab Bag) Evacuation Grab Bag

For situations such as flood warnings or an official evacuation order. Pack only what the intended carrier can safely manage, then test-carry it for 10–15 minutes.

If these 72 hours happen in winter: add a warmth layer

Water, food and torches help a family manage disruption. But if a power cut starts on a cold night, central heating and plug-in heaters may also be unavailable. Before buying anything, ask whether every person could stay warm enough to rest through that night.

Does everyone have warm bedding, blankets or dry layers?
Heat packs warm hands and feet without a socket; they do not replace bedding.
Never use cooking equipment as heating炭爐、BBQ、戶外爐及發電機不可在室內取暖。Never heat indoors with charcoal, BBQs, outdoor stoves or generators.

Four essential safety alerts

Know these before buying supplies; using equipment incorrectly can be more dangerous than not owning it.

Fire: leave immediately

Get out, stay out and call 999. Do not stop to collect belongings or go back for a grab bag.

Carbon monoxide: no indoor burning

Never use camping stoves, barbecues or generators inside homes, garages, tents or enclosed spaces. A CO alarm does not make this safe.

Iodine: official instruction only

Iodine tablets are not part of a general 72-hour kit. Take them only when official services specify the incident, timing and dose.

💡
Where to keep your grab bag

Keep it somewhere accessible that does not obstruct an escape route. Check it every six months: rotate food and water by their dates, review medicines and batteries, and test-carry it again.

Why a 72-hour kit?

After a major emergency, it can take hours or even days for emergency services to reach every affected household. Recent UK floods, winter storms and power cuts have shown that having 72 hours of supplies ready can significantly reduce stress and danger when it matters most.

2026 official update: prepare, do not panic

In July 2026 the government expanded the National Risk Register to include foreign interference and cyber risks affecting data, water and policing systems, and announced a major homeland-defence exercise for 2027. That is national risk planning; household priorities remain water, no-cook food, lighting, communications, medicines and a contact plan—not military gear. Read the Cabinet Office announcement.

UK Government Guidance

GOV.UK Prepare says to keep supplies for “a few days”; it does not set a fixed 72-hour rule. SafeNest uses three days as a practical baseline, with extra provision for medical, infant or pet needs.

💧 Water Supply

Water is the most critical supply. UK guidance gives 2.5–3 litres of drinking water per person per day as a minimum survival need; the SafeNest calculator uses the simpler 3-litre figure. Add more for cooking, hygiene, pets and medical needs.

✅
Audit first, then buy

Most homes already have blankets, torches, cables, first-aid supplies and some long-life food. Audit what you own, then fill the gaps—especially drinking water, no-cook food, a radio and backup charging. Costs vary by household, brand and area.

You don't need to buy everything at once. Consider adding one or two items each shopping trip to build up your kit gradually and spread the cost.

Tips for buying preparedness supplies in the UK

Use suitable items you already own, then fill genuine gaps through supermarkets, pharmacies, hardware shops or reputable retailers. Do not panic-buy in response to headlines; build gradually for your household's risks and budget.

Cyber or phone outage: start with free actions

Enable automatic updates and two-step verification, back up key data, download offline maps, and print contacts and the family meeting point. These steps are usually more useful than extra “survival” gear. Read the SafeNest cyber security and outage guide.

Do not self-buy or take iodine tablets

查看GOV.UK指引

Stable iodine only helps in a specific radiological emergency and at the right time; it does not protect against other radiation. Take it only when official services advise or provide it. It is not part of a general 72-hour household list. See GOV.UK guidance.

Food-grade water carrier
🚰

Food-grade water carrier

How it differs: it is marked food-grade or suitable for potable water, with materials and seals intended for drinking water. An ordinary storage or cleaning bucket may not be approved for this use.

Use / choose: collect or hold water temporarily during an outage. Look for 10–15L, a wide cleanable opening, leakproof cap and tap. A full 15L carrier weighs about 15kg. Never reuse a chemical container.

Water-purification tablets and drinking water
💊

Water purification tablets

What it is: chlorine or chlorine-dioxide products that disinfect against specified microorganisms. They are not filters and do not remove sediment, salt, heavy metals or radiological contamination.

Use / choose: follow the exact litres-per-tablet dose and contact time, and check expiry. Do not transfer instructions between products. Water-company notices always take priority.

Portable microfilter, pouch and hose
🧃

Portable microfilter

What it is: water passes through a fine membrane. Common personal models remove sediment, bacteria and parasites, but usually not viruses, dissolved chemicals or salt.

Use / choose: use only with water sources allowed by the maker. Compare capacity, flow rate, backwashing and spare parts. Never assume floodwater or chemically scented water is safe.

Portable water purifier with cartridge exposed
🫗

Broader water purifier

What it is: only products explicitly rated as purifiers, with stated virus and contaminant performance, provide broader treatment than a basic microfilter. Cartridge capabilities vary widely.

Use / choose: follow the pressing or pumping instructions. Check stated contaminants, cartridge life, replacement cost and weight. It never overrides an official Do Not Drink or Do Not Use notice.

Long-life emergency ration bars in a foil pack
🍫

Long-life emergency ration bars

What it is: compact, calorie-dense, ready-to-eat rations. Their main benefit is portability and no cooking, making them useful in grab bags or short no-food-preparation periods.

Use / choose: check total pack calories, not just the number of bars. A common 500g pack has about 2,300–2,500 kcal—roughly one adult-day. Check allergens and the delivered expiry date.

Cassette butane stove and cartridge
🍲

Cassette stove and butane cartridges

Best use case: homes that rely on electric hobs and want to boil water, heat tins or make simple food during a power cut. This is home backup, not a grab-bag essential.

Use / choose: choose only a cassette stove the maker explicitly permits for indoor cooking, and use the stated cartridge connection. Common long 227g cassette-butane cans and threaded backpacking canisters are not interchangeable. Test it once, calculate backup fuel from the manual's consumption figure, and store fuel cool and separately from the stove.

Emergency foil blanket and thermal bivvy
🌡️

What it is: reflective film that helps reduce heat loss but produces no heat. A flat sheet is lightest; a bivvy encloses the body more fully.

Use / choose: wrap a dry person while keeping the face clear, with dry layers, normal blankets and ground insulation. Choose a flat sheet for minimum pack size or a bivvy for fuller coverage.

Water- or fire-resistant document bag with document copies
📁

Water- / fire-resistant document bag

What it is: a zipped waterproof pouch mainly protects against rain and splashes. Fire-resistant bags are a different category; protection depends on materials and test evidence and they are not safes.

Use / choose: keep printed contacts and copies in the grab bag, with originals and cloud backups stored separately. Compare size, closure and stated testing. Never re-enter a fire to retrieve it.

Winter power-cut warmth supplies: blanket, socks, disposable heat packs and rechargeable hand warmer
🧤

Winter add-on: local warmth without a socket

This does not heat a whole home; it helps with cold hands and feet on a winter outage night. Warm bedding, blankets, dry layers and closed unused doors remain the mainstay. Heat packs only fill a small but useful gap once those basics are covered.

Low-cost drawer backup

Disposable heat packs

How it heats: common air-activated packs contain iron powder, activated carbon, water and supporting materials. Once opened, oxygen starts iron oxidation — controlled rusting that releases heat. No battery is needed, but it cannot be reused or microwaved.

Useful day to day

Rechargeable hand warmer

How it heats: an internal lithium battery powers a heating element, usually through a metal shell or heating surface. It does not store heat: it stops when the battery is empty. It is best for people who will also use it day to day and want extra comfort on the first outage night.

Better for evacuation or a stranded car

It does not generate heat: reflective film slows heat loss. A bag shape encloses the body better than a flat foil sheet, making it useful in a grab bag or car. Use with dry layers and normal blankets, keeping the face clear.

Often overlooked

Foam sleeping mat

Its job is to block the cold floor: heat keeps leaving when you sit or sleep on the ground. A mat, thick yoga mat or existing folding foam beneath you can matter more than another small hand warmer. Choose one that rolls or folds and is long enough to lie on.

Runtime and choosing: for disposables, compare the stated maximum duration, intended body area and expiry date. HotHands UK lists up to 8 hours for its foot warmer; that does not make every heat pack an eight-hour product. Foot warmers go on the outside of a sock, not in place of a hand warmer. For rechargeable models, compare low- and high-setting runtime, USB-C charging, a clear manual and support details. Do not judge by mAh alone; Wh is easier to compare when shown. A power-bank function shares its battery with warmth, so do not expect full use of both.

Two more items, but neither is a mainstay: a hot-water bottle can give short local warmth only where there is a reliable, safe way to boil water (for example, a working gas cooking hob). Without that, it is not a power-cut solution and it is not a treatment for hypothermia. Reusable click warmers crystallise sodium acetate when their metal disc is flexed and commonly give about 45 minutes; they must be boiled back to a clear liquid before reuse, making them a day-to-day outdoor item rather than something to stock for a three-day emergency.

Use safely: follow the product label; do not keep a warmer directly against skin for long periods, use it while sleeping or leave babies and young children to use it alone. Stop using a rechargeable model if it is dented, swollen, smells unusual, overheats or gets wet; do not charge it in bed, under bedding or unattended. Persistent shivering, confusion, slurred speech or unusual drowsiness can indicate hypothermia and need prompt help.
